We arrived on May 13th in my RV with Esther and Reefer after 1300+ miles of driving from Millsboro, DE thru Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and onto Mobile. The reunion started after the big oil spill. This created a real problem for air travel due to the influx of workers needed to clean up the mess. The Quinn’s never reached Mobile. Marie made a pit stop at the hospital for surgery taking care of five bypasses.
May 14, the hospitality room opened at 2 PM. We had our welcome dinner at 5 PM at the hotel and all enjoyed it.
Saturday, May 15, we boarded the bus for our tour of historic Mobile. We stopped at one of the ANTE-BELLUM Museum homes. They served tea and refreshments. At 12 PM, we had lunch at the Café Royal. At 1 PM, we returned to the comfort of our hotel. At 2 PM, we left for Coast Guard Air Training Center. We had a tour of the base and had the honor of seeing the four newest rescue helicopters. At 6:30 PM we had dinner on our own and returned to the hotel at 9:30 PM. Some of us went to the hospitality room after this long day.
May 16, we boarded our coach for the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL. It would take three days to see the whole museum. It was an eye opener for everyone. There were planes from World War I through Vietnam. We had lunch at Cubie’s at the Museum. We stopped at the PX at the Naval Station and bought out the place. We returned to the hotel at 6 PM, spent the rest of the evening in the hospitality room.
May 17, 9 AM, we toured the USS Alabama Memorial Park. Memorial services were held on the fantail of the ship. Gordon Bell did a great job of honoring our shipmates who passed the bar. Joe Oliva threw a wreath overboard in honor of our shipmates who have gone before us. We had lunch in the Ward Room at 12 PM. Returned to the hotel for our board meeting. The new officers were chosen: President Vance Vaught, Vice-President Ed Quinn, Secretary-Treasurer Jim Kelly, Member-at-Large Mike Truex and Past-President Joe Oliva. 5 PM Pictures taken. Presenting of the colors by the US Marine Reserves Color Guard. 6 PM, we had a Mardi Gras celebration. The Mardi Gras was started in Mobile, AL. For those shipmates that missed our 25th Reunion, missed a great Mardi Gras show with their gala costumes and performances. Our Mardi Gras King and Queen were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bowker. We were then entertained by Doug Breau with his magnificent voice and music from the 1940s and 1950s. He serenaded Esther Dodson with one of Frank Sinatra’s oldies and she thanked him with a kiss on the cheek. Everyone had a wonderful evening.
May 18, we all met for breakfast, checked out, and went on our merry way. I drove my 40foot RV to Port Royal SC and visited Captain Roger Banner for about two Hrs. I’m so glad I did. He passed the Bar on Nov. 6th 2010. We will all miss him. A great skipper and shipmate. It was honor and privilege to represent the USCGC Campbell Association at his final resting place in Leesburg Virginia.
